The original plexiglass rear window developed cracks near screw holes.
Made a paper template of the window, then cut and finished a plexiglass
replacement. However, it started to
crack at screw holes when attaching to metal window frame.
Third try at window construction, started with 3/19 LEXAN
(See
what-is-lexan
)
Won't
split/crack like plexiglass. Installed with 8/32 stainless steel button head screws, threaded
into frame, nylon washers under screw head, and nyloc nuts. A thin layer of silicon caulk
was used between window and frame to reduce scratching of painted LEXAN scratches
more easily than plexiglass. Am using aircraft quality window cleaner. (See
PLEXUS® AIRCRAFT PLASTIC CLEANER
).
Current FFR coupes have a heavy glass
window. LEXAN is much lighter. Lexan is but one of a family of thermoplastics whose
main claim to fame is in its ability to undergo significant deformation without cracking of breaking.
I am very pleased with the results. ~George
