(Rear Window Replacement)
The 76 had a scratched up rear window, plus the defrost circuit look
worse for he wear. So I took on this little project and replaced
the original real glass with a new, non-defrost glass. I am really
not going to park the car outside so defrost feature was not needed.
Some of the supplies used to install new rear glass can be seen in
the above photo. Use
a couple of cheap glass holders to help steady the glass. Install
the glass myself. The interior real glass trim fell apart; a
replacement was installed. Also, recommended was a special glass
cleaner. When cleaning out old gasket material it is recommended
that the exterior paint be protected with paint tape(the blue tape).
The next thing was to remove the old glass. In order to get at the rear
glass from the inside, had to remove some interior panels. A piece of wire
threaded through the old gasket material from the exterior to the interior
can be used to cut the gasket and free the window. Did not use a wire myself,
but instead I gently pulled at the old glass until it was free. Then cleaned
off the old gasket material that remained on the body. Next step was to
install a new gasket ... took me several tries to learn how to get it decent
looking. In the above photo, the new gasket material has already been
installed.
Finished with a clean, clear, shinny rear glass installion, which does not leak a
drop of water. The WEB has several step-by-step late C4 rear window installion
instructions. For example, Corvette Magazine has a great set of instructions at:
